Derek Jarman’s (the production designer of Ken Russell’s The Devils) 1978 film Jubilee is one of my all time favorite punk films. Set in a dystopian version of London, Queen Elizabeth I is brought to the future by an occultist and his spirit guide after the demise of Queen Elizabeth II. Once she arrives she partakes in nefarious activities and observes the actions of a group of nihilistic punks as they traverse the decrepit landscape of 1970s Britain. The film features cameos by many famous people of the London punk scene such as Malcolm McLaren’s protege Jordan, Adam Ant, Toyah Wilcox, Wayne County, The Slits, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Brian Eno was also responsible for the film’s score. The film is aesthetically amazing and holds true to 70s punk aesthetic, although Vivienne Westwood reportedly created a t-shirt printed with an open letter to Jarman damning the film, claiming Jarman misrepresented the punk scene of that period. The film has since become a cult classic and even attained a release on The Criterion Collection. Track down a copy of this film, you will not be disappointed.
